The Cutting Edge of Healthcare

Are you a serious student of medical science? Enter the world of high-tech healthcare. Deal with the art and science of clinical genetics, histotechnology, and radiologic technology with equipment and expertise not available anywhere else in the nation. Classroom experiences at the MD Anderson campus begin with DNA extractions, human chromosome visualization, and hands-on karyotyping in order to examine the principles of genetic information and how the molecular world affects the macroscopic world. Next, study the principles of histotechnology management of tissue specimens received from surgery. Tissues are processed, sectioned, and stained for microscopic evaluation for the quality assurance of the laboratory test. The slide specimens are used for diagnostic and research applications and are an effective method to diagnose cancer and other systemic diseases. You will then switch gear towards the principles of imaging physics, radiobiology and acquisition of radiographic images through the observation of radiography, CT, MRI and Ultrasound. Lab experiences at MD Anderson will demonstrate the principles and practices of image production and radiation safety in the detection of cancer and human disease. The laboratory experiences provide the basis for their treatment choices and for their discussion of scientific advancements in targeted intensity modulated cancer treatment. Note: The classes will take place at MD Anderson Cancer Center campus.
